Gender-based Violence (GBV) is a serious global health challenge, human rights violation, and development issue that continues to pose a challenge in the twenty-first century. GBV is defined as any act of violence meted to an individual based on their gender that results in physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering (WHO). It also includes economic deprivation and isolation which may cause imminent harm to the safety, health, and well-being of an individual and society. GBV is deeply rooted in structural norms, gender inequalities, and power imbalances that cut across geographical, sex, race, culture, class, and religion. Although GBV affects all sexes, women, girls, and vulnerable groups are disproportionately affected. Globally it is estimated that one in three women will experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime (WHO).
